Nokia announced two Windows Phone 8 devices, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 smartphones at a combined press event with Microsoft held in New York on Wednesday. The company is working hard towards regaining its number one position in the smartphone market. However, it may even be looking at releasing a new tablet soon.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop hinted that the company is working on  new tablet that will run on Microsoft's latest OS. "We have not announced any tablets, but I think the opportunity is very clear. People today increasingly are looking for a common digital experience between their smartphone and tablet, with a PC, and with their gaming platform, and so there's clearly an opportunity across there. This is something that we're looking at very closely," Elop reportedly told ABC News.

Elop further stated that the timing for the new tablet launch couldn't have been more perfect, courtesy its tie-up with Microsoft. "Microsoft is introducing Windows 8 as well for PCs and tablets in the months ahead; same user experience, except taken to a larger screen size, one big family, and therefore many people around the world will gain experience with what we're doing. So, it's a very, very exciting time for us," he said.

This however, won't be the first computing device from Nokia's stable. The company had released a 10.1-inch netbook in 2009 called the Booklet 3G which featured a 1280x720 HD display, powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with 1GB RAM. It was priced at 575 Euros which did make it more expensive than other netbooks available at the time.

With Microsoft set to launch its Surface tablet in October, it will be interesting to see how Nokia's plans for its new Windows 8 tablet take shape.
