You can capture pictures in raw mode on iOS devices inside the Lightroom app itself, Adobe has announced. The files will be saved in the open source raw .dng format created by the company.

"Having a true end-to-end raw workflow, powered by DNG and Lightroom, on your iPhone and iPad makes it possible to create absolutely stunning photos that, until a few years ago, could only have been done with a traditional camera," Adobe said in their announcement.

There are numerous advantages to raw capture as opposed to jpeg/png files that the iPhone supported until now, as any dedicated photographer would attest, including the ability to tweak them more, change white balance, and much more latitude.

"The beauty of using raw is that you have the ability to revisit all of those settings after the shot has been captured to a degree that isn't possible with other file formats," Photoshop creator Thomas Knoll said in a blog post. "In contrast, once you take a photo using the JPEG file format, certain aspects like white balance, sharpening, and noise reduction cannot be edited-they are set forever."

To make use of it, you'll need to be running an iOS 10 device with a 12-megapixel camera, the list of which includes the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPad Pro 9.7, and the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Lightroom on Android has had support for the same since February this year, and iOS got support for raw editing back in July. Adobe noted that they will have an update soon for the new sensors on both the new iPhones as well.
