  • Amazon will resume selling the Apple TV on its platform

Apple plans to announce Amazon Prime video app to its Apple TV App Store during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5 in San Jose, California, as per a media report.

"The app is expected to go live this summer, but the hard launch date might change. Amazon had previously declined to even submit a Prime Video app for inclusion in Apple's Apple TV App Store, despite Apple's 'all are welcome' proclamations," BuzzFeed reported on Friday.

In January, Apple announced a change in App Store policy increasing the tvOS apps size limit from 200MB to 4GB.

"With the increased data size, developers can include more media in their submission and provide a complete, rich user experience upon installation," the company said in a post.

Also, tvOS apps can use 'On-Demand Resources' to host up to 20GB of additional content on the App Store.

BuzzFeed goes on to claim that while a previous report by Recode had claimed Apple and Amazon were nearing an agreement that would bring the Prime Video app to the Apple TV, the deal is now official, and the app would be announced at WWDC.

As part of the reported deal, Amazon would resume selling the Apple TV streaming player on its e-commerce properties - something it had stopped doing back in 2015 alongside the Google Chromecast streaming dongle. The report adds that the exact date the Apple TV will return to Amazon storefronts is not known.

To recall, Apple's WWDC 2017 developers conference kicks off on June 5 and the company has started sending media invites to the opening keynote earlier this week. At the event, beyond iOS 11 and the next version of macOS, Apple is now also anticipated to launch its Siri-powered speaker to take on Amazon Echo and Google Home.
