Dropbox Is Killing Mailbox Email Client and Carousel Photo App

Dropbox is shutting down its email application Mailbox and photo storage application Carousel. The move comes as the company plans to increase focus on its main cloud storage service and core experience.

Amid reports around the demise of the two services, the cloud storage company on Monday officially announced that it will be shutting down Mailbox on February 26, 2016, and Carousel on March 31, 2016.

The cloud storage giant reportedly paid a sum of $100 million in 2013 to acquire the mobile email client, and a year later, launched it for select platforms. While it never revealed exactly how many people were using Mailbox, the company however did note once that 800,000 people were on the waiting list.

Multiple reports claim that Mailbox didn't have much traction. It is likely true considering Dropbox hadn't pushed any new feature or significant improvements to the email client in the past few months.

"Over the past few months, we've increased our team's focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we've made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox," the company wrote in a blog post.

The photo and gallery and video management app Carousel allowed users to store, manage, and organise photos. Launched in 2014, the app competed with the likes of Google Photos, and Yahoo's Flickr. The good news for Carousel users is that the company is working on ways to integrate the photo app's features right into Dropbox.

"We'll be taking key features from Carousel back to the place where your photos live--in the Dropbox app. We'll also be using what we've learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox."
