Shazam partners with Saavn to enhance Indian music discovery experience

Shazam has announced a partnership with India focused online music streaming service Saavn, under which Saavn's music library has been incorporated into Shazam's music database. The company mentions that the database will continue to grow, adding thousands of new and exclusive tracks every week.

The move will allow Shazam, which is best know for its music recognition service and apps, to offer its users the ability to tag and discover the latest tracks from South Asian artists in Bollywood and other popular genres including bhangra, devotional, ghazals, Carnatic, and Indipop, among others; and music in regional languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, and Bhojpuri.

"The Indian music market is experiencing tremendous growth worldwide, and is expected to grow by 98% over the next five years," said Will Mills, Director of Music and Content for Shazam. "Shazam is incredibly excited about our partnership with Saavn - as the leader in the Asian music industry as it represents the largest partnership we've done in this region and they will help us provide our music fans with an amazing discovery experience."

With the partnership, people who follow Indian music will have a fast and easy way to find out the name and artist of music tracks along with an easy way to purchase tracks from iTunes. Additionally, they will also be able to share their finds with friends on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ via Shazam's apps.

Founded in 2006, Saavn claims too have a music catalog that includes over 1 million Indic tracks for its streaming "search and play" and radio services. It had recently launched Saavn Pro, its ad-free, offline play subscription based service.

Shazam on the other hand, claims to have a user base  more than 300 million people across 200 countries and says that it adds 2 million new users each week. It offers unlimited tagging (music recognition) through its free and premium Encore Apps on iOS and Android devices. Shazam's music database currently exceeds 27 million tracks, and it includes social sharing features as well as streaming lyrics in time with the music with LyricPlay. In addition to LyricPlay, the Shazam app also includes features such as Shazam Friends social sharing, links to YouTube videos, artist and tour information. It also offers apps fro Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia phones.
