Nuance Communications, the company that powers the voice of Apple's virtual assistant Siri, is now bringing similar technology to third-party iOS and Android apps.

The product, called Nina, will let any iOS or Android developers add voice capabilities into their app by simply using Nuance's Software Development Kit (SDK). The product is aimed at banks, insurance companies and other enterprise users, though it is available for use in other general purpose apps as well.

"Nina takes natural-language understanding, and it provides a way for a developer to add that into an app," Robert Weideman, executive vice president of Nuance's enterprise division, told Mashable.

Nina brings Siri's voice recognition and natural language comprehension capabilities to any app, while adding an extra layer of security. Unlike Siri, that understands and obeys anyone's voice commands, Nina can be configured to restrict itself to only commands issued by a specific user. This extra level of biometric security will be especially appreciated by developers of financial applications, and other apps that need to limit access to a specific user.

"For the first time on a mobile device, our virtual assistant doesn't just understand what you said and what you want, we can actually understand who said it," added Weideman.

Nuance's SDK is available starting Monday, while the company expects Nina-powered apps to be available later this year.
