  • New mention makes it easy to get the attention of someone in a group chat
  • Mention feature available to both Android and iPhone users
  • The new feature is limited to group chats

WhatsApp has finally enabled the mention feature on its Android as well as iPhone app. The mention feature works same as it does on Facebook and Twitter. Users will have to use "@" sign in a group chat and the app will automatically suggest names of the group members. Notably, the feature is currently limited to group chats only. The mention feature was first rumoured back in June.

The new feature of the popular instant messaging app will make it easier to get the attention of someone in the group by mentioning them. Notably, the new feature is visible to Android users who are running version 2.16.259 and above. Considering, we were running the same version since last few days and received no new update, the new feature was probably enabled from the server-side by the company. While it was first spotted by beta users, it is now available for general users as well. As for WhatsApp for iPhone, users running version 2.16.10 and above are seeing the feature.

WhatsApp has lately been adding plenty of features to its messaging service, with the most recent being message quotes and replies. The feature allowed users to quote messages when replying. The message quotes and replies feature is self-explanatory and the user needs to long press a message in any conversation to see a reply option pop up alongside star, delete, forward, and copy.

Additionally, WhatsApp's Legal Info page has some new details how the company is looking businesses to communicate with each other using the WhatsApp app. The company is rumoured to add bots to its messaging app. WABetaInfo on Twitter pointed to WhatsApp's new legal info that notes, "We will explore ways for you and businesses to communicate with each other using WhatsApp, such as through order, transaction, and appointment information, delivery and shipping notifications, product and service updates, and marketing."

The page further clarifies, "you may receive flight status information for upcoming travel, a receipt for something you purchased, or a notification when a delivery will be made. Messages you may receive containing marketing could include an offer for something that might interest you. We do not want you to have a spamy experience; as with all of your messages, you can manage these communications, and we will honour the choices you make."
