Highlights
  • Trailer gives first proper look at Tom Hardy as Venom
  • It's a bit spoiler-y though and seems to largely give away the plot
  • Venom is out October 5 worldwide

The first full-length Venom trailer, starring Tom Hardy, is here. It introduces the main characters involved in the Spider-Man spin-off, starting with Tom Hardy as a journalist named Eddie Brock, Michelle Williams as his girlfriend Ann Weying, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake, the head of Life Foundation, a company that apparently experiments on humans and acquires the black-coloured symbiote, and Jenny Slate as an employee at the Life Foundation.

If you don't want the movie to be spoiled for you, don't watch the new Venom trailer. Sony had spoiled much of Spider-Man: Homecoming with its trailers, and it seems to have taken a similar route with Venom.

The trailer shows Slate's character contacting Brock and revealing what the company is up to, and as you'd expect from a movie called Venom, he ends up accidentally being infected by the symbiote. He starts hearing voices in his head, and when Drake's security shows up at his home, Brock shows the first signs of turning into the eponymous anti-hero.

The new Venom trailer suggests he's not in control of his actions though, with the symbiote trying to protect itself, as Brock says after killing a bunch of people: "Why would we do that?" Later, the symbiote threatens Brock and forces him to agree to doing "whatever we want". Cue snippets of several action sequences, which end with Brock transforming into the character as people know it looks. "We are Venom," he (or is it they?) shoots back when someone asks him.

Venom has a confusing place in the larger film universe. Though it shares the world of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is not a part of the Marvel world. The trailer gives a generic action-movie vibe, though the film has assembled a stellar cast: Hardy is known for Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, and an Oscar nominee for The Revenant. Williams was seen in Brokeback Mountain and Manchester by the Sea, while Ahmed is a rising star for his work in Star Wars' anthology chapter Rogue One and The Night Of.
