Nintendo has finally put paid to rumours of a Wii 2 by announcing that a playable model of the new console will be showcased at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in June 2011. This, after nearly a week of speculation about Nintendo prepping for a Wii successor.

Nintendo claims that the Wii has sold 86.01 million units since its launch in 2006 up to March 2011. The rumoured specifications of the device show that it will be able to hold its own against the current generation consoles but the real question is how will it stand against the next generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft?

We may have to wait a bit for the answer to that one as it seems that both PlayStation and Xbox will not have successors any time soon. The traditional lifecycle of gaming consoles has been about five years. The PS2 was launched in 2000 and is still selling globally, but the PS3 was launched in 2006. Similarly the original Xbox was launched in 2001 and its successor, the Xbox 360 was launched in 2005. But the current generation consoles are truly powerful and developers haven't yet tapped their complete potential, especially of the PS3.

Last year also saw the launch of motion gaming controls Microsoft Kinect and PlayStation Move for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 respectively. If Sony's gaming hardware lifecycle is to be believed, we will see the company support the PS3 up till 2016. That being said, there are beginnings of rumours that hint at Microsoft and Sony unveiling their next gen consoles in 2014.
