  • Project Scorpio is Microsoft's next iteration of the Xbox
  • Games for Project Scorpio will be in native 4K resolution
  • This is unlike the PS4 Pro which promises to upscale games instead

After stating that video game publishers can decide how they want to bring their games to Project Scorpio - Microsoft’s next iteration of the Xbox, the company itself will ensure its own games will be in native 4K resolution.

“Any games we’re making that we’re launching in the Scorpio time frame, we’re making sure they can natively render at 4K,” said Shannon Loftis, Microsoft Studios General Manager in conversation with USA Today.

This comes after it was confirmed that not all games playable on the PS4 Pro will have full 4K support.

While it’s but obvious that every PS4 game will run on the PS4 Pro, not all of them will reap the benefits of the system’s improved specifications. The same applies for games in the future - both announced or otherwise - though the chance of enhancements for the PS4 Pro is a lot higher versus games that are already out.

What’s also important is that not all games will have the same visual upgrades. Although 4K adoption appears to be faster than HD, it’s important to note that not all 4K TVs are the same. The kind of experience you get will depend on support for additional features such as high dynamic range (HDR).

All of this simply adds another level of complexity to the buying process. Earlier, buying a console assured you of uniform support and performance over a few years. But with Microsoft and Sony looking for inspiration in smartphones and PC gaming, the days of relatively care-free console purchasing seem to be over.
