Our moon wasn't the peaceful grey orb we know and love but a fiery spectacle spewing molten lava. Sounds like science fiction, right? But get this – while those iconic dinosaur movies might not show it, during their reign, the moon was actually dotted with active volcanoes! Talk about an Earth Day double date gone wrong!

For decades, we thought lunar volcanism stopped billions of years ago, leaving behind the vast, cratered landscape we see today. But recent NASA discoveries, like the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, have revealed a startling truth: some lunar lava flows could be as young as 100 million years old, which conveniently lands smack dab in the dinosaur era!

While the exact reasons are still being investigated, scientists believe the moon's interior holds more heat than previously thought. This internal furnace fuelled eruptions, creating dark, smooth plains called "mare."

Now, picturing lava oozing across the moon can be tricky. Unlike Earth, the moon lacks a thick atmosphere to trap heat. So, these eruptions wouldn't have been fiery mountains spewing molten rivers. Instead, imagine gentle oozes and bubbling lava fields, perhaps glowing faintly in the eternal lunar night.

But even these quieter lunar volcanoes had a significant impact. Their eruptions released gases, potentially contributing to a thicker early moon atmosphere, though not enough for dino pool parties. Furthermore, volcanic ash might have been launched into space, potentially influencing Earth's climate and contributing to the dinosaurs' eventual demise – talk about a volcanic hot potato!

While we might never know for sure if any dinosaurs personally witnessed lunar lava shows, the discovery rewrites our understanding of the moon's history. It shows us that our celestial neighbour is more dynamic than we thought, a once fiery world simmering under its dusty surface.
