Dropbox has acquired Clementine, a startup best known for its internal communications app. The acquisition highlights the cloud storage company's growing interest in expanding its services.

Founded in 2014, the Clementine app focuses on bringing secure text messaging and voice calling features to devices that aren't tied to a phone number. Its app also allows for conference calls.

"We're now excited to announce the next stage of our journey - we're joining Dropbox," the company said in a blog post announcing the acquisition on Wednesday. "Our mission and passion for workplace collaboration remains the same. Our stage will grow dramatically as Dropbox builds on our technology to engage with its over 400 million users and 100,000 businesses."

As part of the deal, Clementine would shut down its service on August 31, 2015. The company assures that it would help out regular and premium subscribers during the transition.

Clementine is one of the many companies which Dropbox has acquired over the past few months. The company earlier this year bought Umano, a popular news listening app. Among other companies, Dropbox also acquired Mailbox email client in March.

Dropbox is a company to watch out for in the coming months. It appears the company has some big plans lined up. Dropbox is yet to make an announcement about this acquisition. Clementine didn't disclose financial detail of the deal.
