Lenovo Recalls Some ThinkPad X1 Carbon Laptops Over Potential Fire Hazard

Lenovo has recalled some of its 5th-generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops due to potential fire hazard. The company says that some of the laptops may have an unfastened screw that may lead to a damaged battery, which may eventually cause overheating and other fire issues. Lenovo said that it will offer a free service inspection program for all affected ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptops. The number of affected laptop units is estimated to be 83,500.

The Lenovo laptops that are affected were manufactured over a , between December 2016 and October 2017. The company has listed all the models that have been affected by the issue. The machine types noted by the company are - 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3, 20K4. Users can visit Lenovo's website to check if their laptop is included in the recall. The company has also put up a page offering details on where to get service along with phone numbers.

The company wrote: "Lenovo received three customer reports worldwide of an overheat condition related to an unfastened screw which resulted in damage to the customer's laptops. Lenovo has received no reports of damage to persons or property, other than to the laptop PCs."

Meanwhile, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) also notified consumers of the recall on its site, detailing that recall involves "14-inch ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptops. They were sold in silver and black." The commission said that about 78,000 laptops are affected by the recall in the US, and an additional 5,500 in Canada. It, however, added that there have been no reports of overheating in the United States.

Lenovo had recently launched the 6th generation of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The company had pitched it as 'the world's lightest 14-Inch business laptop'. The device received a few significant upgrades from the previous generation.
