Huawei reportedly began working on an in-house operating system in 2012

Huawei's legal woes in the United States, which might possibly culminate in a ban on its products in the country, will have some major implications on Huawei's business as well as the company's entire mobile and PC strategy. Huawei's CEO of Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, has revealed in an interview that the company has developed its own operating systems. The Huawei chief revealed that the proprietary operating systems are the company's Plan B and will only be put into effect if Huawei is forced to cut business ties with US-based partners like Google and Microsoft.

Huawei recently sued the US government over a law that banned federal agencies and their contractors from procuring Huawei's equipment and services, calling it unlawful. While the clampdown on Huawei products is yet to evolve into a complete ban on using its products for all US citizens, Huawei had apparently been busy developing its own operating systems as a contingency plan - something which has now been confirmed by none other than the company's CEO of Consumer Business Group. In an interview with German agency Die Welt, Yu divulged that Huawei has developed in-house operating systems.

In response to a query whether Huawei has thought about developing its own operating system if the company's products need to become non-reliant on Google and Microsoft, Yu responded positively and revealed that the company has already done so. However, he did not specify whether Huawei has already developed an alternative operating system to Android, Windows, or both.

He added that the company developed in-house mobile operating systems to be used in circumstances when Android and Windows are no longer on the table, possibly in a scenario when US-based companies are ordered to cut off ties with the Chinese electronics giant. However, he mentioned that Huawei likes to work with its partners like Google and Microsoft, which provide the Android and Windows operating systems for Huawei's smartphone and laptop portfolio.

Yu's statement leaves no room for doubt, but this is not the first time that reports of Huawei working on its own operating system have surfaced. As per a previous report by the South China Morning Post, Huawei started working on its own operating system for smartphones back in 2012. Additionally, the company has reportedly developed operating systems for tablets and computers as well. The development of in-house operating systems was reportedly the brainchild of Huawei's founder and president, Ren Zhengfei, who envisioned it as preparation for a worst case scenario.
