Apple publicly released iOS 7, the new iteration of its mobile operating system that powers its iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices on September 18th.

The Cupertino giant announced on Monday that the OS was already running on 200 million devices, double the rate at which iOS 6, the last version of the OS was adopted by users.

To offer some context, Apple CEO Tim Cook had said that Apple would soon be selling its 700 millionth iOS devices in October, when the company announced the new iPhones and the OS. Also, it's worth pointing out that iOS 7 can not run on old iOS devices such as the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, the first-generation iPad, and all iPod touch devices prior to the fifth-generation iPod touch. So the number of eligible devices would be lesser than the total devices.

A number of sources tracked the rollout and adoption rate of iOS 7 and discovered that a large number of users wanted to make the switch despite the OS bringing with it some radical UI changes.

Mixpanel, an analytics startup reported that iOS 7 eclipsed iOS 6, in less than 2 days of its rollout. According to a post by Venture Beat, that reported about the pattern points out that the adoption rate of iOS 7 crossed that of iOS 6 on September 20. The chart was based on 2.8 billion actions of people using thousands of mobile applications.

Search-targeted advertising company Chitika also reported that iOS 7 had hit an adoption rate of 32 percent in the first 48 hours in North America. In contrast, iOS 6 took 3 days to reach 30 percent.

Cleartrip, the leading Indian online travel agent has also shared adoption data for iOS 7 in India, revealing that the adoption rate for iOS 7 was twice as fast as the rate for iOS 6. It shared the data in a new blog post revealing that within less than a week, iOS 7 was contributing over 45 percent of the total iOS traffic to Cleartrip's mobile website. It says it took over a month for iOS 6 to reach a similar level.

Interestingly, the adoption rate on NDTV's app is now 62 percent. This means that 62 percent users who access the NDTV app are already running iOS 7.
