Update at 1:58pm IST: Facebook seems to be back up after being down in several countries for roughly 30 minutes, which can be considered the longest outage in recent memory experienced by the social networking giant.

Speaking about the outage, Carson Dalton, Facebook India's Communications Head, responded to Reuters by email, "We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100 percent. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Original story: Yes, Facebook is down, and access seems to be down across several regions in the world (from the US to the Philippines), judging by the reactions on the Twitter-verse, where the hashtag #facebookdown is currently trending.

Visiting the Facebook website gives the following message:

Sorry, something went wrong.

We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.

Go Back

There's no other word from Facebook on the reason behind the downtime. The 'Go Back' link below the message redirects the user to the login page. Logging in brings the user back to the same error page.

The access problem is not limited to the Web, but is also being experienced on the mobile apps, with the message 'Error loading News Feed' being displayed.

Twitter responses to Facebook being were varied, with people asking if it was real, to others tweeting about the crash.

There were funny tweets as well, with an example being, "#Facebook refugees are flooding on Twitter. Look at them all lost, disorientated, hopelessly trying to post cute baby photos #facebookdown"
