If you've purchased a third generation iPad in the past 30 days, then you could walk up to your local Apple store and get it exchanged for a brand new iPad that just got updated.

The news was noticed by CNET Editor Sharon Vaknin after reading a tweet from user @TubbyEmu stating that an Apple Care representative personally confirmed the exchange offer. However, the exchange offer seems to be applicable for US specific customers only, with no details for other markets as of now.

In another tweet, the user mentioned that the only requirement for the exchange is that the tablet should have no signs of wear and the buyer must present a receipt showing the original date of purchase.

CNET reports that the decision to offer the exchange solely resides with select local Apple stores. While speaking to the manager of one of the stores in San Francisco, it was clarified that not all stores may provide the offer.

The manager at the Stockton Street store in San Francisco explained that "this specific store" would allow purchasers of the third-generation iPad to exchange their device for the fourth-generation iPad if purchased within the last 30 days. She emphasised that, unless the recently-purchased iPad showed serious signs of wear-and-tear, the usual 14-day return policy would be waived. And what about other stores?" You'll have to call and find out. She explained, "We can't speak to other stores' policies -- this is something our store has decided to do.

Apple unexpectedly announced the upgrade to its full-sized tablet at the iPad mini event held in San Jose, California. The fourth-generation iPad is priced starting $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only version, like its previous model.

The device is expected to offer a faster performance, courtesy the dual-core A6X processor and quad-core graphics. It also features the 5-megapixel iSight camera with FaceTime and 720p video capture and work on more "LTE" wireless data networks around the world. Apple has also replacing the earlier 30-pin dock connector with the new Lightning connector, first introduced in the iPhone 5.

At the event Apple also unveiled a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, refreshed Mac mini models and the new iMac measuring 5mm in thickness.
