Want a Movie With William Shatner and Morena Baccarin? Crowdfund Malevolent

If a slasher B-movie that stars Deadpool (and Firefly) star Morena Baccarin, Star Trek's Captain Kirk William Shatner, not to mention Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, Robocop, Reaper) then you're going to want to know more about Malevolent. It's an animated film that looks gory and fun, with a stellar cast, but there's a catch. The movie needs some extra money to finish filming, and that's why the creators have turned to Indiegogo in an attempt to raise $45,000 (approximately Rs. 30 lakh).

When the film's writer Jim Cirile emailed Gadgets 360, we were a little skeptical, but looking at the trailer and the details shared on the Indiegogo page, it looks to be a genuine campaign that's trying to raise a realistic amount of money for what seems to be credible goals. The movie features good looking hand drawn 2D art - it looks more like a comic book in action than anything else, and the story sounds ridiculous and fun.

Malevolent is the story of a young woman called Miriam DeKalb who works for a non-profit. Miriam is dying, and her billionaire father Cyrus - played in a cartoonish over the top way by Ray Wise - decides to call his four children together to "discuss his will".

That's the idea anyway, but Cyrus is a bit of a psycho, and it turns out that he has decided that all of his children are traitors and disappointments. In short, he believes that they deserve to die, and he's decided to help accomplish this result - and that means that instead of telling them how much they've disappointed him, Cyrus wants to stuff Miriam and her siblings into a series of elaborate death traps that spell their doom.

Except, not exactly. You see, that's just the start of things - there are also aliens betting on the outcome of the death traps, and the "game" is being run by Morena Baccarin's character the Game Master, while William Shatner is involved as "The Overseer", the announcer who is calling the events of the games. Cirile didn't tell us too much about the twists in the movie, sticking to the description above, but the script was described as 'Saw' meets 'Groundhog Day', because the Game Master can reverse time and change the way different events play out, which also sounds a little bit like save files in video games to us, especially if you take into account Shatner's character, who sounds like the narrator in games such as 'Unreal Tournament'.

There aren't any real rewards to get for backing the movie - apart from that fact that it will exist - but a $10 (roughly Rs. 680) pledge will get you a mention on the movie's webpage and behind the scenes footage of the actors in the studio, and a $20 (roughly Rs. 1,360) will also get you a digital copy of the movie. Or hey, if you're really excited about the movie, pledge $1,000 (roughly Rs. 68,000) and you'll get a number of perks including your name in the movie, a poster, a headshot package and a script analysis, not to mention behind the scenes interviews with Baccarin and Shatner, plus a copy of the DVD signed by the Director, and Shatner too - one out of five has already been claimed, and the project has reached 55 percent of its overall call at the time of filing this story.
