There is a saying that goes, “If it ain't broke, don't fix it”. Xiaomi seems to have taken this to heart with the launch of its Redmi 17C, the latest smartphone in its budget lineup. The Redmi 17C is the successor to last year's Redmi 15C, which is priced much lower at Rs. 12,499. The Redmi 17C gets nothing new, but thanks to the ongoing memory crisis and rising memory prices, it now starts at Rs. 20,999 for the base variant with 4GB RAM + 128GB of storage. Also available is a 6GB RAM variant that will cost you Rs. 22,999. After a few hours of use, here are my first impressions.

Redmi 17C 5G Summary

The Redmi 17C 5G has an IP64-rated design which offers good resistance against dust but basic resistance against water. The phone feels slim but is large and also feels heavy. The faux leather rear panel feels cheap even if it appears premium.

Raw performance is average for a budget device, but Xiaomi has done a fine job optimising it to run on entry-level hardware with limited RAM. At the same time, the software is stuffed to the brim with third-party apps and games.

The display is large and is bright enough to be used outdoors. The overall camera experience is quite poor, even for a budget device, it's not optimised to take advantage of the basic hardware, and the results are quite bad.

Battery life is pretty good and will easily last two days with casual use. Charging is fast given the standard capacity battery.
