  • The update is available for latest AirPort Express model
  • Apple had stopped selling AirPort routers in April

Apple has issued a firmware update for the Airport Express that brings AirPlay 2 support to the now discontinued router. With AirPlay 2 support, users will be able to use a speaker connected to the AirPort Express as part of a multi-room audio setup. Apart from multi-room audio, AirPlay 2 also promises lower latency while playing audio.

The update notably also brings support for Apple's Home app, which means users can add a speaker connected to the AirPort Express as an accessory to the Home app and control it from the iPhone or via Siri.

According to 9to5Mac, the firmware update 7.8 has been rolled out to the latest AirPort Express (2012 second-generation model) only. Users will need to install the update via the AirPort Utility app for iOS or macOS.

To recall, the AirPort Express is a Wi-Fi router that comes with a 3.5mm audio jack that can be used to connect any speaker to your home network. The router then becomes an AirPlay target for compatible devices.

Apple officially discounted the AirPort line of routers in April this year though it has continued to issue critical bug fixes for the routers, and now has added a significant feature as well.
