Samsung is known to have spread its wings in the mobility business and the company has made a mark for itself through its Android smartphone line-up. The company is also offering affordably priced Chromebooks in select markets. However, not many are aware of the fact that Samsung also has a sizeable presence in the desktop space.

As per a recent news report by Korea Times, Samsung is planning to shut down its desktop business. The news report also claims that following this move, the Korean chaebol will be focusing more on its tablets, and all-in-one and laptops businesses.

A Samsung official while talking to Korea Times had said, "Tablets, all-in-one and hybrid PCs are Samsung's current focus. Samsung is speeding up its restructuring of its PC business via product realignment towards profitable variants."

PC shipments around the world have been on a decline and traditional PC companies such as Dell and HP are facing the heat. Samsung on its part has not been into the desktop business for a long time like HP or Dell. Moreover, the desktop business is also not a core business function of Samsung. Given that Samsung is making a huge push in the tablets and mobiles space, and the strategy is yielding good results, this does look like a good possibility.

However, Samsung has denied chalking out any such plan. As per a news report by The Next Web, Samsung claimed that reports regarding the company planning to shut down its desktop business are groundless. The website quotes, "The rumour that Samsung is withdrawing from the PC desktop business is groundless. Samsung will continue to offer diverse PC products according to consumer and market needs."

So it will be interesting to see if Samsung is able to create a ground in the desktop space, when traditional PC makers too are looking at better, more profitable opportunities in the mobiles and tablets space.
