Android 6.0 Marshmallow Now Running on Over 1 Percent of Active Devices: Google

Five months after its release to Nexus devices, Google's latest mobile operating system version - Android 6.0 Marshmallow - has finally surpassed the 1 percent adoption mark on active devices visiting Google Play. The search giant has updated its Google Play distribution data for the seven-day period ending February 1.

According to Google's latest Android distribution chart, Android 6.0 Marshmallow now runs on 1.2 percent active Android devices. This is a 0.5 percent increase from the company's January figure of 0.7 percent.

Sharing the distribution data of different versions of Android, Google reported that Android Lollipop has a total share of around 34.1 percent of active Android devices (with Android 5.0 Lollipop running on 17.0 percent of devices and Android 5.1 at 17.1 percent) that check into Google Play.

According to the latest data, Android 4.4.x KitKat is going down steadily in the charts and now powers 35.5 percent devices compared to 36.1 percent last month - a decrease of 0.6 percent.

The Android distribution data also shows that Android Jelly Bean has a combined share of 23.9 percent - falling 0.8 percent from January's 24.7 percent. Android 4.1.x is seen on 8.8 percent devices (down from 9 percent), Android 4.2.x on 11.7 percent (down from 12.2 percent), and Android 4.3 on 3.4 percent devices (down from 3.5 percent).

Android 4.0.x or Ice Cream Sandwich, in Google's latest numbers, registered a share of 2.5 percent, down 0.2 percent from January. Android Gingerbread (v2.3.3-2.3.7) and Android 2.2 Froyo's device distribution shares are 2.7 percent (down 0.3 percent) and 0.1 percent (down 0.1 percent) respectively in the latest charts. To note, the figures are gathered from devices visiting the Google Play app, which supports Android 2.2 and above.

The OpenGL version distribution across active Android devices, on the other hand, saw OpenGL 2.0 dominating at 53.2 percent (from 54.2 percent last month), and OpenGL version 3.0 steadily rising to 39.7 percent (38.9 percent last month).
