New FLIR One Thermal Imaging Accessory Launched for Android and iOS

FLIR, the thermal imaging infrared camera maker, has announced its second-generation FLIR One plug-in thermal imaging accessory for Android and iOS devices.

The updated FLIR One is now available worldwide at an MSRP of $249.99 (approximately Rs. 16,000) for iOS devices, while the Android-compatible version of the FLIR One will be available in July.

The company alongside also announced a price cut for its first-generation FLIR One for Apple iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, which will be available at $149.99 (approximately Rs. 9,500). To recall, the first-generation FLIR One was launched at $349 (approximately Rs. 22,000).

The highlight of the FLIR One accessory is that it transforms a mobile device to into a thermal imager that with infrared can show heat images and measures temperature.

The FLIR One can be attached to the Micro-USB connector for Android or to a Lightning connector for iOS devices. The new FLIR One is powered by an internal battery and features a Lepton thermal camera core, which is four times the resolution of the previous version.

The company claims that the FLIR One can show temperature variations of less than a tenth of a degree. "The technology enables a host of practical applications, from identifying energy inefficiencies and water leaks in a home, to enabling safe and enjoyable outdoor exploration," adds FLIR.

Apart from introducing the new FLIR One accessory, the company announced that it will release an updated iOS software development kit (SDK) and a new Android SDK to allow developers to build and launch apps for both mobile device platforms.

Commenting on the launch, Andy Teich, President and CEO of FLIR Systems said, "Last year, we successfully introduced the world to the FLIR One, the world's first thermal imaging accessory for a smartphone. This next generation FLIR One builds on this success by offering higher performance, broader compatibility, and a compelling value proposition. And with the launch of our new application developer support programs, we expect to see new applications and use cases emerge for this new FLIR One platform."
