Japanese mobile carrier, NTT Docomo, has finally confirmed that it will not be releasing any smartphone in 2014 running Tizen, a mobile operating system that was jointly developed by Intel, Samsung and others.

The reason behind the cancellation is said to be the inappropriate timing for the release. A spokesperson further added that the smartphone sales have not increased substantially in the past year, and said that Japan was not ready for three different OSes for now.

It is being speculated that the carrier might be waiting for some hardware to show-up in the upcoming MWC 2014 event in February, which would go well with the OS and would promise a substantial amount of growth of the same in future.

NTT Docomo had earlier in Jannuary announced a delay in the arrival of the much-awaited Tizen, a week before its previously confirmed launch window before the end of the fiscal year in March 2014, citing development delays.

A list of features of the latest iteration of Tizen was revealed when the Samsung NX300M camera came out with the OS back in November 2013. The Tizen 3.0 is said to include features like the support 64-bit processors including Intel architecture and ARM chips, in addition to improved performance and support for more RAM and more. The detailed features for Tizen OS can be viewed here.

Tizen is an open source offering based on the Linux operating system, and a product of a tie-up between companies from Japan, China, South Korea, Europe and the United States.

The consortium that makes up Tizen Association include Docomo, Intel, Fujitsu, Samsung and LG, Huawei, and mobile carriers Vodafone and Orange.
