Netflix has released the trailer for its first Marathi film Firebrand — produced by Priyanka Chopra and directed by National Film Award-winning Aruna Raje (Rihaee) — which centres upon the complexities of modern-day relationships. It follows a Mumbai-based lawyer, played by National Film Award-winning Usha Jadhav (Dhag), who fights for women in sexually-abusive situations. She is revealed to be a rape victim herself, in addition to belonging to an oppressed caste. National Film Award-winning Girish Kulkarni (Deool) plays her husband, while Sachin Khedekar (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose), and National Film Award-winning Rajeshwari Sachdev (Sardari Begum) play another couple. The release date for Firebrand is February 22, 2019.

Firebrand is set to be the first digital release for Chopra and her mother Madhu Chopra's production house, Purble Pebble Pictures, best known for its 2016 critically-acclaimed Marathi comedy-drama Ventilator, which won three National Film Awards. Netflix first announced Firebrand — with its cast, crew and synopsis — back in November at a showcase event in Singapore. It's calling the film a “contemporary, slice-of-life story” that “is high on drama”. While tackling difficult cases, Jadhav's lawyer character is “also dealing with intimacy issues in her own marriage”, as hinted at in the Firebrand trailer.

For Chopra, this is one of two films produced by her that will release in 2019. The other is The Sky is Pink, a biopic of motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary, in which Chopra also stars as the mother to the protagonist, played by Secret Superstar's Zaira Wasim. For Netflix, Firebrand will be the second (licensed) original film from India this year, after the critically-acclaimed Delhi drama Soni.
