The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India reported an increase of 2.5 percent for the quarter ended June 30 at nearly 2.5 million units as against the like period of the previous year, a report by research firm Gartner said on Wednesday.

"This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market which grew 17 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2011," said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst, Gartner.

However, Tripathi also added that economic factors such as rising interest rates and high inflation costs resulted in slower consumer demand.

"With the recent hike in commodity pricing such as fuel and food items, the cause of concern continues to exist in the Indian market. However, we expect the market to perform far better in the coming quarter due to the festive season which is considered as auspicious for buying," said Tripathi.

Acer clinched the number two position from HP due to its strong commercial business with 12.1 percent market share while Acer had 11.2 percent market share.

Dell remained at number one position with 16.7 percent market share.

All the major multinational PC vendors, with the exception of HP, experienced double-digit growth in PC shipments during the period under review.

Multinational brands contributed more than half of the total PC shipments in the second quarter of 2011 with shipments from Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo -- the top 4 vendors -- representing 50.4 percent of the market.

Local vendor HCL accounted for 6.6 percent of PC shipments.
