Last month we covered that Apple is reportedly testing an iOS 6.0.1 update, which was likely to address various bugs and fixes. The wait is over as the company has finally released the first update to iOS 6 since its release in September.

iOS 6.0.1, a free update, brings various bug fixes and improvements including one that that earlier prevented the iPhone 5 users to receive OTA updates. You can install the update either via iTunes or update wirelessly.

The update also improves upon glitches pertaining to Wi-Fi and cellular data connections as well as an issue pertaining to Passbook security, whereby Passbook details were unexpectedly being accessible from the lock screen. It also fixes a bug affecting Exchange meetings that earlier caused unexpected cancellations for the entire calendar invite group, when just one user declined an invite.

Another noticeable bug fix is the one that caused strange static and horizontal lines being displayed across the keyboard. Other fixes include dealing with camera flash issues, adding control for iTunes Match syncing via 3G/4G data connections and improving reliability of iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th generation) when connected to encrypted WPA2 Wi-Fi networks.

The bigger iOS update, referred to as iOS 6.1, that was also being tested earlier, has now been released in a beta version to developers for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches.

If we go by a timeframe comparison, Apple released iOS 5.0.1 a month after iOS 5.0, while iOS 5.1 came almost 5 months later. iOS 5.0.1 was all about bug and security fixes along with the additional multitasking gestures for original iPad users. iOS 5.1, on the other hand, improved the camera on the iPad and increased the size limit for OTA app downloads.

Here's a complete changelog:
  • Fixes a bug that prevents iPhone 5 from installing software updates wirelessly over the air
  • Fixes a bug where horizontal lines may be displayed across the keyboard
  • Fixes an issue that could cause camera flash to not go off
  • Improves reliability of iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th generation) when connected to encrypted WPA2 Wi-Fi networks
  • Resolves an issue that prevents iPhone from using the cellular network in some instances
  • Consolidated the Use Cellular Data switch for iTunes Match
  • Fixes a Passcode Lock bug which sometimes allowed access to Passbook pass details from lock screen
  • Fixes a bug affecting Exchange meetings
