  • OnePlus 3 underperformed against Galaxy S7 Edge in a video.
  • Carl Pei believes that this was the way to provide "best user experience."
  • OnePlus 3 was launched last week at Rs. 27,999.

One of the biggest features touted on the new OnePlus 3 flagship smartphone was its massive 6GB of RAM. A recent speed test YouTube video however raised questions over RAM management on the OnePlus 3 as it didn't fare well in a speed comparison test against the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The video showed both the handsets compared alongside to see which performed better under various usage scenarios including opening apps, games, and managing memory. The OnePlus 3 despite the huge 6GB of RAM didn't match the speed of the Galaxy S7 Edge in most tests, which packs 4GB of RAM.

Following the report, OnePlus defended the memory management on the OnePlus 3 smartphone. OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pie on Twitter stressed that the OnePlus 3 had "a different strategy for RAM management that benefits battery." He added that it would provide the "best user experience."

Pei further explained that the RAM management can be adjusted via third-party ROMs. He said that the company released the kernel source code files of the OnePlus 3 to developers just a day after the official launch. He believes that this will allow developers to build their own custom ROMs for the new flagship.

It's worth noting that XDA Developers member Mario Serrafero has suggested a possible tweak to boost the memory management on the OnePlus 3. The tweak enabled the OnePlus 3 to handle double the number of apps at once that it could handle earlier. Pei however reverted back saying that "it's not a fix, just another take on user experience priorities."

The OnePlus Co-Founder also said that since 6GB of RAM on a smartphone was new to Android "there's still lot to explore" and added that the OnePlus team was working to optimise for further enhancements.

To recall, the OnePlus 3 was launched last week globally and was priced at Rs. 27,999 in India.
