Highlights
  • Anyone can now purchase a Reliance Jio SIM
  • But the offer is available only at select outlets
  • You get 3 months of unlimited usage free with every SIM

A Reliance Jio SIM has been one of the most sought-after items in recent times. First, it was available only to Reliance employees, and later bundled with Reliance's own Lyf-branded smartphones. Recently, owners of certain Samsung smartphones could walk-in to Reliance Digital stores and procure a Jio SIM, and just last week, this offer was extended to more Samsung smartphones and some LG models as well.

Now, Gadgets 360 can confirm, owners of any 4G smartphone can walk-in to select Reliance Digital and Xpress Mini stores and get their hands on a Reliance Jio SIM, complete with the Jio Preview offer that gives three months of unlimited data, calling, SMS, and access to Reliance Jio services JioOnDemand. The hawk-eyed would've noted the catch in the previous line - the word 'select'.

That's right, this offer is applicable only in select Reliance Digital and Xpress Mini outlets, which, Gadgets 360 understands, are free to offer Jio SIM cards to customers at their discretion, since there has been no official directive from Reliance Jio with respect to the same. So if your local outlet won't give you a Reliance Jio SIM on the basis of your non-Lyf, non-LG, non-Samsung smartphone, we suggest you try another outlet.

While, LG and Samsung customers had to generate a code through the MyJio app to get their hands on the SIM, it seems owners of other 4G phones can just walk into a store to get a Reliance Jio SIM without having to worry about QR codes and the likes. Customers need to submit their KYC documents to avail the offer, just like they need to while buying a new mobile connection with any other operator.

Reliance Jio - which is currently testing its network - is expected to do a commercial launch of its network in the 'coming months', according to Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Industries Limited Chairman. Ambani is said to have recently met Telecom Secretary JS Deepak to discuss rollout plans for Reliance Jio, which has accused incumbent players of not releasing sufficient interconnection ports during its test run of services.
