  • An official filing has confirmed the 'Galaxy Watch' moniker
  • The smartwatch was previously rumoured as the Gear S4
  • It is also said to have Bixby support

The 'Galaxy Watch' will be the next smartwatch model by Samsung, if an official trademark filing with the Korean Intellectual Property Office is to be believed. A previous rumour revealed the new moniker and claimed that the South Korean giant will use the new name for the Gear S3 successor that was previously in the headlines as the Gear S4. It was also expected to run Wear OS, instead of Samsung's own Tizen operating system. Now, it has also been reported that the next generation Samsung wearable will come with Bixby support. The company is already in plans to uplift its voice assistant to compete against the likes of Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri, and it is now said that Bixby 2.0 will be deployed on the Galaxy Watch to deliver an enhanced experience. The same Bixby version will notably be a part of the Galaxy Note 9 that is expected to debut at the Galaxy Unpacked event on August 9 alongside the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Tab S4.

As per the listing on the official Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) website, Samsung has patented the Galaxy Watch moniker. An image confirming the new name has also been published alongside the patent listing. Instead of opting for the Gear branding, the preference for the 'Galaxy' brand for the next smartwatch model is thought to be because it will run Google's Wear OS against Samsung's proprietary Tizen OS that was powering the last three iterations of the Gear-Series models.

In addition to the revelation of the Galaxy Watch moniker, it has now been rumoured that the new Samsung smartwatch will be powered by Bixby voice assistant. SamMobile reports that the new model will come preloaded with Bixby. It is said to be accessible to users either through the home button or using the "Hi Bixby" voice command. Further, the integration on the Galaxy Watch is reported to be the same Bixby 2.0 that is debuting on the Galaxy Note 9. We can, therefore, expect some enhanced natural language processes and artificial intelligence (AI) advancements.

Notably, as AI Center Head Gray G. Lee in a media interview in May revealed, there are plans to bring Bixby to a total of 14 million units of Samsung devices this year. The Galaxy Watch will certainly contribute to some extent on that front. Also, the Bixby integration within the Galaxy Watch will make a strong competitor against Apple Watch that includes Siri support.

If we believe some previous reports, the Galaxy Watch will run Wear OS and support UX interaction. The smartwatch, which was previously rumoured as the Gear S4, is also said to pack a 470mAh battery and offer blood pressure monitoring as well as some other fitness-focused features.
