Microsoft to Invest $17.5 Billion to Scale India’s AI and Cloud, Joins Google and OpenAI’s Recent Push

Microsoft, on Tuesday, announced an investment of $17.5 billion (roughly Rs. 1.57 lakh crore) in India to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure, support government projects around skilling, and to expand its ongoing projects. The announcement was made following a meeting between the Redmond-based tech giant's CEO Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The company claimed it to be its largest investment in Asia, and highlighted that the capacity building could help the country's inclusive growth and economic transformation. Interestingly, Google and OpenAI have also announced similar investments in India this year.

Microsoft Announces Major AI and Cloud Investment in India

In a newsroom post, the tech giant announced  a major commitment of $17.5 billion (roughly Rs. 1.57 lakh crore) to India over the next four years. Microsoft said the new funds will be directed toward three core pillars of scale, skills, and sovereignty. 

On the infrastructure side, the company announced that the ongoing project to developing the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad will be operational in mid-2026. Calling it its largest hyperscale region in the country, the company said it will be as large as “two Eden Gardens stadiums combined.” The investment fund will also go towards the Windows maker's three existing operational data centre regions in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.

Microsoft also announced the integration of its AI capabilities in two digital public platforms of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, e-Shram and the National Career Service (NCS). Both platforms will now offer features such as multilingual support, AI-powered job matching, predictive analytics for skill and demand trends, automated resumé creation, and more.

On the skilling front, the tech giant said it will work with government, industry, and digital public platforms to equip 20 million Indians with essential AI skills by 2030. The company also shared that its ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative has already trained 5.6 million people since January 2025, with more than 1,25,000 individuals earning a job or entrepreneurial opportunities from the training.

The company also introduced Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud for Indian enterprises. These data storage and management options ensure sensitive information remains within the country's border. The system is split into two main offerings: the Sovereign Public Cloud, which uses Microsoft's existing data centres in India but adds specific compliance safeguards and governance rules; and the Sovereign Private Cloud, a more isolated solution that allows customers to run a fully functional Microsoft cloud environment on their own premises, with the flexibility to stay connected to global services or operate entirely offline for maximum security.

Previously, the tech giant had announced that Microsoft 365 Copilot will offer in-country data processing in India bythe  end of 2025, making the country one of the four global markets to receive this level of data sovereignty.

Interestingly, this investment comes at a time when India's data-centre and AI infrastructure sector is experiencing rapid growth, and the technology itself is being heavily adopted across different sectors, making India a lucrative market for AI players. In October, Google made a commitment of $15 billion (1.3 lakh crore) to build an AI data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Airtel. The company is also partnering with Reliance to establish the Jamnagar Cloud region.

In September, a report claimed that OpenAI is also in advanced discussions to build an AI data centre in India with at least 1GW capacity. The AI giant has also released an India-exclusive ChatGPT plan dubbed ChatGPT Go, which has been made available for free for the next 12 months.Notably, in February 2026, India will host its inaugural Global AI Summit, where all of these companies will also be invited alongside dignitaries from various countries.
