Grand Theft Auto 6's Netflix Premiere Sets a Blueprint and a Bad Precedent

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a game like no other. The open world crime title from Rockstar Games is set to break launch records across media when it comes out in November. Its impact on culture and consumption will surely be felt way beyond the video game landscape. And the larger entertainment industry knows that. On Thursday, Rockstar confirmed that the first extended look at GTA 6 will premiere on streaming giant Netflix later this month.

The announcement underlines Grand Theft Auto 6's place as an entertainment property that warrants a marketing push that transcends conventional video game campaigns. Game trailers and gameplay presentations usually debut at dedicated video game showcases like Summer Game Fest, Sony's State of Play, Nintendo Direct, or Xbox Games Showcase. Developers and publishers release new trailers for upcoming games on their YouTube channels. But GTA 6 is getting an exclusive premiere on the world's largest streaming service.

Netflix called the planned GTA 6 premiere a result of a “first-of-its-kind partnership” with Rockstar Games. In its own announcement, the streamer said the event “represents the next generation of storytelling and content on Netflix.” The streaming giant has previously held premieres for major live sports events, most notably the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson boxing match in 2024 that drew in 65 million concurrent streams. But GTA 6 is a different beast altogether.

“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,” said Brandon Riegg, vice president of Nonfiction Series at Netflix.

“The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we're honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.

“It's a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

Netflix and Rockstar have not shared the details of the deal that brought the GTA 6 premiere to the streaming service. Netflix likely paid a handsome sum to get timed-exclusive rights to the game's extended showcase. Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson believes the streamer paid a “significant amount” to Rockstar parent Take-Two to make the deal happen.

“GTA 6 revenue has probably already exceeded the equivalent of one million units sold because of the Netflix deal. I doubt we'll get exact numbers, but it was a significant amount to make Take-Two take that deal,” Henderson said on X following Rockstar's announcement.

But what does GTA 6's exclusive Netflix premiere mean for gaming?

First, we must reckon with the unsavoury part. Rockstar Games and Netflix are essentially putting a price on a trailer. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, August 27 at 3 pm ET (August 28 at 12:30 am IST in India). Sure, the show will debut on YouTube six hours later, but to watch the premiere on the streaming service, you must be a Netflix subscriber.

Riegg himself said the “next part of the Grand Theft Auto story” will come to “Netflix members first.” That sets a troubling precedent. The extended look, which will essentially do a deep dive into GTA 6's story, setting, and gameplay aspects, will be exclusive to Netflix subscribers first before it's available to everyone else on YouTube.

It's of course highly likely that soon after the GTA 6 showcase goes live on Netflix, bootleg rips will be uploaded to piracy sites. But that doesn't change the fact that Rockstar has chosen to put the GTA 6 trailer behind a paywall.

Secondly, GTA 6's Netflix premiere could lay down a new blueprint for video game marketing. Not every game will fit the bill, but major triple-A releases (think The Witcher 4 or the next Assassin's Creed) could follow in GTA 6's path.

Many major game publishers already have relationships with streaming companies. Ubisoft is working with Netflix on the live-action Assassin's Creed series. We could see more game premieres on traditional film and TV streaming services. For instance, the next Tomb Raider game, which is being published by Amazon Game Studios, could get a GTA 6-style premiere on Amazon Prime Video. So could the sequel to 007 First Light, as Amazon MGM now owns the intellectual property rights to James Bond. 

So, in addition to eager fans, it's likely that major studios and publishers will be watching the GTA 6 Netflix premiere quite closely. If the YouTube views of GTA 6 trailers are any indication, the Netflix event will be a success. It could even break concurrent streaming records on the streaming service, bringing a larger audience to video game reveals and trailers beyond the crowd of faithfuls that watch traditional game showcases.
