Apple has announced macOS 27 Golden Gate, the next major version of its operating system for Mac computers, at WWDC 2026 alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. The update succeeds macOS Tahoe 26 and introduces a mix of artificial intelligence features, Siri enhancements, design refinements, and performance upgrades. The Cupertino-based tech giant is also bringing additional controls for the Liquid Glass interface while further optimising the software for Apple silicon. The release marks the end of major macOS upgrades for Intel-based Macs.
macOS 27 is also the first major macOS release not to support Intel-based Macs. Apple had previously confirmed that macOS Tahoe would be the final version of the operating system to receive major feature updates on Intel hardware. While those devices will continue to receive security updates for the next three years, future macOS features and capabilities will be reserved for Macs powered by Apple silicon. The change marks another milestone in Apple's shift to Apple silicon, which now powers the company's entire current Mac lineup.
Apple has also revisited the Liquid Glass design language introduced with macOS Tahoe. The visual redesign was one of the most noticeable changes in last year's update, but it also drew criticism from some users who found certain interface elements difficult to read because of the heavy use of transparency effects. With macOS 27, users will be able to adjust the intensity of those effects across the operating system. Apple has also refined the appearance of windows and other interface elements to create a more uniform look throughout the software.
Beyond the visual changes, Apple is positioning macOS 27 Golden Gate as a release focused on refinement and performance. The company said it has made a range of under-the-hood improvements designed to help Macs feel faster and more responsive during everyday use. Apple is also continuing to expand Apple Intelligence across macOS, with new AI-powered tools, Siri enhancements, and productivity features forming a key part of the update. Apple said Apple silicon will continue to play a central role in supporting the AI and machine learning features being introduced across its software platforms.
Apple will begin rolling out macOS 27 Golden Gate to developers following WWDC 2026, with a wider public release scheduled for later this year alongside the company's other next-generation operating systems.
