The first of every month means Google releases distribution data for the various versions of the Android operating system. According to the latest numbers for the month of March the newest operating system, Android 4.4 KitKat, has more than doubled its share of the Android device pie from 2.5 percent in February to 5.3 percent in March. The jump is not surprising given that Samsung has pushed out updates for its Galaxy line of tablets and devices, while even the very popular Moto G has given a significant boost to the numbers. In fact it was the only version that has gained significantly since the previous month.

On the Android Developers blog the numbers that have come in show declines in devices running for Android Jelly Bean (versions 4.1- 4.3), Ice Cream Sandwich (versions 4.0.3-4.0.4) and Gingerbread (version 2.3.3-2.3.7). Jelly Bean, which still has the majority of the market share, fell from 62 percent in February to 61.4 percent in March. Ice Cream Sandwich fell from 15.2 percent in February to 14.3 percent in March. Gingerbread's fall continued from 19 percent in February to 17.8 percent in March.

Every month the distribution numbers are given out on the Android Developers blog, so as to aid developers with their efforts in developing apps for those versions which might be profitable for them. The percentages are based on devices that access the Google Play store every month. Android Honeycomb (version 3.2) stayed put at 0.1 percent. It is interesting to note that the numbers for it have neither risen nor fallen since January. Froyo (version 2.2) on the other hand, fell another 0.1 percent from 1.2 percent in February to 1.1 percent in March.

In addition, Google has also listed distribution numbers for Open GL support across Android devices. Open GL 2.0 is still the leader with 89.4 percent of the total share. But it is important to note that it is falling. It fell from 92.3 percent in January to 91.1 percent in February to 89.4 percent in March. So there is a steady decline. Open GL 3.0 on the other hand is gaining at a steady rate. It rose from 7.6 percent in January to 8.8 percent in February to 10.5 percent in March. Open GL version 1 stayed put at 0.1 percent.
