The iPhone XS Max's 6.5-inch Super Retina OLED display panel has received the highest A+ rating

Apple earlier this month launched its latest flagship smartphone series, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, along with the cheaper iPhone XR. With the former two having released in the market last week, DisplayMate has put the larger one to test. To give a brief background, DisplayMate has been a reputable name in determining smartphone display quality. The iPhone XS Max's 6.5-inch Super Retina OLED display panel has received the highest A+ rating, and is also the recipient of DisplayMate's "Best Smartphone Display Award".

Support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision on the iPhone XS Max's display helps it take the extra edge in the market. "The iPhone XS Max can extend the Dynamic Range by up to 325 percent for HDR photos and up to 400 percent for HDR videos," according to the report by DisplayMate. Apart from that, DisplayMate tested out the smartphone's display based on different factors including a larger full screen display, 2.7K resolution, industry standard colour gamuts, automatic colour management, display power efficiency, True Tone viewing modes, Night Shift mode, and more.

The report also noted that the iPhone XS Max has a screen reflectance of 4.7 percent, which is "close to the lowest" that DisplayMate has measured for a smartphone. The new Super Dim setting on the iPhone XS Max was also lauded for providing comfortable use in extreme low light conditions, taking the brightness down to just 2 cd per square metre. The phone has a peak screen brightness of 660 nits, lower than the record 710 nits of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

There are, however, certain minor issues with the display, as noted in the DisplayMate review. At a viewing angle of 30 degrees, the iPhone XS Max has the largest colour shift of 6.2 JNCD, which is claimed to be noticeable but not objectionable. Even the image contrast is "slightly too high" thanks to a steep intensity scale. In conclusion, DisplayMate states that the iPhone XS Max matches or sets a record for these benchmarks. Last year, DisplayMate had awarded the iPhone X's OLED panel with the most colour accurate display. The report also mentioned that the 2017 flagship, at the time, offered "close to textbook perfect calibration and performance" with the help of a built-in automatic colour management system.
