State-owned telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Thursday introduced a new promotional offer for smartphone users under its GSM mobile services on a pan-India basis with effect from Friday, January 5. The promotional offer gives new BSNL data users 2GB of free data.

Detailing the offer, BSNL in an emailed statement said that it is applicable only for new BSNL GSM data subscribers with 3G-capable smartphones. These subscribers will get 2GB of free data with a 30-day validity. Presumably, after this point, subscribers will have to buy further data packs or plans to enjoy mobile Internet from the telecom operator.

BSNL said the new promotional offer is based on the government's Digital India initiative, and that it is hoped to help subscribers experience the Internet for the first time.

Late last month, Detel Mobiles, an Indian feature phone manufacturer, and BSNL collaborated to provide new bundled offers to users. Users will now be able to avail a Detel D1 mobile along with a BSNL connection for a price of Rs. 499. The offer went live on December 23 and is available pan-India.

As we mentioned, the Detel D1 feature phone - touted as the 'most economical feature phone' - will be bundled with a BSNL connection for a combined price of Rs. 499. This prepaid pack will offer the user Rs. 103 worth of talktime, with call rates of 15 paisa per minute for all BSNL to BSNL calls. Calls to other networks will be charged at 40 paisa per minute. The pack also gives the user access to personal ring back tone for 28 days.
