Perplexity upgraded its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot on X (formerly known as Twitter) last week. Dubbed Ask Perplexity, the AI bot can now generate videos based on user prompts. While the company did not reveal which large language model (LLM) was being used to generate these videos, it did highlight that guardrails were set to ensure synthetic videos of people with a likeness to real-world celebrities and public figures were not generated. Currently, the feature is available to all X users when they tag the chatbot in their posts or first-level comments.

Ask Perplexity Can Now Generate AI Videos

In a post on X, the official handle of Perplexity's AI bot confirmed that it now has video generation capability. Interestingly, it is the first and only chatbot on the platform that is offering this feature. Even Grok, which was built by Elon Musk's xAI team, does not have this capability.

Currently, Ask Perplexity can generate eight-second-long videos based on either just a text prompt or an image input alongside a text prompt. The output can contain native audio, and the chatbot can be instructed to add dialogues to multiple speakers. As mentioned above, the AI firm did not mention the AI model it is using for this feature, but based on the description, it is likely using Google's Veo 3 model. It is not possible to say so with certainty, however.

Once the announcement was made, X users began testing out the feature with a myriad of imaginative and hilarious prompts. Gadgets 360 staff members came across several posts where users asked the AI bot to generate a video with a real-life celebrity or public figure; however, the end output only featured a character that vaguely resembled the real person. However, since users can generate videos using image prompts, it is not certain whether Perplexity will fulfil those requests or not.

A day later, the chatbot posted, “I've read through your video request DMs. Some of y'all need help. Not AI therapist help. Real help.” making a tongue-in-cheek comment about the extreme nature of video generation requests, and likely indicating that such requests will not be fulfilled.
