Samsung is one of the few brands that have consistently launched budget smartphones in 2025. We saw multiple smartphones in the Galaxy F, M, and A series in a similar price segment. And now, with the Galaxy M17, the company is trying to consolidate its position in the sub-Rs 15,000 price segment. The latest smartphone from the brand is priced at Rs. 12,499 for the 4GB + 128GB model, Rs. 13,999 for the 6GB + 128GB option, and Rs. 15,499 for the 8GB + 128GB model. That being said, does it make sense to go for this smartphone in this highly competitive market? I got the chance to spend some time with the device, and here's what you need to know.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Design: Slim and Lightweight

  • Dimensions - 164.4 x 77.9 x 7.5mm
  • Weight - 192g
  • Colours - Moonlight Silver and Sapphire Black

The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G follows the legacy of Galaxy smartphones when it comes to design. The brand has ensured that the handset offers similar distinctive characteristics to those found in the Galaxy A and Galaxy F series. The smartphone comes with a sleek and lightweight profile as it measures 7.5mm in thickness and weighs 192 grams. You also get two different colour options, Moonlight Silver and Sapphire Black, which look subtle.

The smartphone is available in different colour options.

The flat frame design is surely a plus in this price segment. The volume controls and power on/off button sure feel tactile, and I liked that the area where these buttons are placed is slightly raised to provide a better grip. The power button also serves as a fingerprint sensor, allowing quick unlocking of the smartphone.

However, the major highlight of the smartphone has to be the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, which is rare at this price point. The same type of display protection is seen in premium or mid-range smartphones. So, getting this in the budget is sure a good thing. Moreover, the handset also comes with an IP54 rating, which is decent considering this price tag.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Display: Vibrant and Colourful

  • Display - 6.7-inch Full HD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display
  • Refresh Rate - 90Hz screen refresh rate
  • Other Features - Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, 1100 nits of HBM peak brightness

The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G features a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display, one of the best in the segment. The display offers vibrant colours and maintains Samsung's signature output of punchy colours, appropriate contrast, and detailed texts. The display also comes with a 90Hz screen refresh rate, which is slightly underwhelming compared to the competition, as most smartphones in this segment now offer a 120Hz refresh rate. That said, the whole experience is still smooth and usable in daily life.

The handset offers decent display at this price point.

The smartphone also offers 1,100 nits of brightness, which is decent for outdoor use. However, the screen is a bit reflective in nature, which is a slight inconvenience when you view it directly in sunlight. That said, what makes it better than the competition is the inclusion of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, which makes it durable and offers better protection against accidental drops. The display also comes with Widevine L1 certification, meaning that you can watch HD content with ease on this smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Software: Focus on Longevity

  • Software - One UI 7.0
  • Version - Android 15
  • Updates Promised - 6 Years of OS updates and 6 years of security patches

The latest Galaxy M17 5G runs OneUI 7.0, based on Android 15. However, during the review period, we got the One UI 8 firmware update. Moreover, the company promises to deliver six years of OS upgrades and six years of security patches for the latest smartphone, the highest you can get in this price segment.

The company is offering seven years of security patches with this smartphone.

Coming to the features, OneUI 8.0 is one of the most interesting user interfaces, clean yet still offering a lot of customisation options. You can customise the icons, fonts, and more with ease on this user interface. Moreover, there is NFC for contactless payments via Samsung Wallet or other payment apps. This is again a rare feature to find in this price segment.

The smartphone also packs some of Google's AI features, including Circle to Search and Gemini Live. These features work as intended, with minimal hassle or lag during testing.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Performance: Not a Powerhouse

  • Processor - Samsung Exynos 1330 SoC
  • Memory - Up To 8GB RAM
  • Storage - 128GB

The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G is powered by the Samsung Exynos 1330 processor, which is also present in various Galaxy A and Galaxy F series smartphones in a similar price segment. The phone also comes with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

4 Samsung Galaxy M17 5G

The smartphone is powered by an Exynos chipset, which is meant for daily usage.

In terms of daily usage, the smartphone feels ‘okayish' if not decent. The Exynos 1330 is not a great processor, to be honest, as there were some instances of the device getting slightly sluggish even when scrolling through the smartphone. This is something that the brand needs to take a look at to optimise it for better performance. We ran some synthetic benchmarks on this smartphone, and this is how it turned out compared to the rest of the competition:

In terms of gaming, the smartphone can handle most of the casual games with ease. However, heavier games like BGMI and Call of Duty Mobile can be played with Medium to High graphics. With BGMI gameplay, I got close to 50 to 55 FPS with Medium + High graphics settings.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Cameras: Mixed Bag

  • Rear - 50-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture + 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor + 2-megapixel macro sensor
  • Front - 13-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture

Coming to the cameras, the performance is comparable to the other sub-Rs. 15,000 smartphones we have tested in the past. The smartphone features a triple-camera setup on the rear panel, with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2-megapixel macro shooter.

During the day, the primary sensor does a good job, capturing realistic tones of the subject without overdoing the colours. The photos came out to be natural-looking in most scenarios, and the images had decent dynamic range. However, the ultra-wide-angle sensor misses out on details. Moreover, there is a noticeable inconsistency in the photos captured with a primary and a wide-angle lens.

Coming to the low-light performance, this is where you can see the limitation of a budget smartphone. The primary sensor captures decent photos when the ambient light is good, though there's noise and softness when you zoom in. The colours are slightly muted, and the dynamic range is not that great.

Moreover, with night mode, you get slightly better at dealing with noise. Still, it also tampers with the natural colour output of the photo, which is not the case with normal mode. With the ultra-wide-angle lens, you get more landscape, but the images lack detail, and the colour inconsistency between the primary and wide-angle sensors is quite prominent.

The selfie performance is decent in daylight conditions. The phone captures natural skin tones, and the photos offer decent dynamic range and a natural depth effect. However, in low-light conditions, the images are somewhat degraded due to noise and softness.

Moving on, the smartphone offers 1080p video recording at 30 fps, and you can switch between the primary, wide-angle lens, and selfie camera while recording. The stabilisation is decent, all thanks to the OIS support.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Battery: Decent

  • Battery Capacity - 5,000mAh
  • Wired Charging - 25W
  • Charger - Not Included

The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G 5G comes with a 5,000mAh battery. You get a decent battery output, all thanks to the optimisations from the brand. During the review period, the phone easily lasted a full day with moderate use, averaging 6 hours of screen-on time.

7 Samsung Galaxy M17 5G

The handset is loaded with decent battery life.

The charging speeds could have been better. The phone supports only 25W fast charging, and, as usual, the box does not include a charger. The phone was able to charge from 0 percent to 39 percent in 30 minutes, and 100 percent in 1 hour and 27 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy M17 5G Verdict

To conclude, the Samsung Galaxy M17 5G is a decent option in this price segment, though it is not free of flaws. The handset offers a premium-looking design, which is reminiscent of premium Samsung smartphones. The display is vibrant, and the Corning Glass Victus protection is surely a major add-on at this price point. The battery life is decent, while the long software support is a rarity in this price segment.

That said, the phone still has its fair share of cons. To start with, the performance is something that makes you feel a bit more, especially when it comes to demanding tasks. The camera performance is weak in low-light conditions, while the fast charging speeds could have been better, provided that the competitors are still offering much faster charging speeds in this price point.
