The company, known for expanding into varied categories, has now started two new offerings - one that encourages kids to use physical books and the other that deals with pet products. Amazon has launched a service called Prime Book Box for kids that delivers a curated set of physical books to children, curated by professional editors, according to their age. Furthermore, the tech giant has also launched its own pet product brand called Wag with dry dog food being sold initially, but plans to introduce different products for pets is in the offing.
Starting with physical books, the Prime Book Box doesn't expand Amazon's Kindle platform that has been selling the idea of paperless reading for a while now. However, children's books filled with colourful picture stories, physical books in the smaller age group are still in high demand. Cashing in on that concept, the Prime Book Box service will be made available to Prime customers with the price stated to be at $22.99 per box (roughly Rs. 1,500). Amazon says that this price is 35 percent lesser than what the prices of the normal books would be, if you purchased them outside of your Prime membership.
These books are curated by editors, and sent to your doorstep at regular intervals. Of course, Amazon will allow you to check the curated list of books sent every month, and change them from the list provided in order to avoid duplication. This service starts sometime later in the year, but registrations for an invite have begun. You can also choose if you want the box monthly, every two months, or every three months.
This service is quite an intelligent way to introduce a kid to Amazon at an early age. The package arrives in the name of the child, and the whole excitement of opening it up and finding picture books is an endearing activity that the child will look forward to. This service is only going to be introduced in the US initially.
Talking about Wag, the pet product brand has been launched for Amazon Prime subscribers only. The company debuted with a dry dog food product, but it plans to venture into other pet supplies as well, reports Bloomberg.
With Wag, Amazon adds to its growing private-label brands like AmazonBasics, Rivet and Stone & Beam, and even Mama Bear which deals into diapers. Amazon has in the past ventured into varied categories like clothing, household goods, and even batteries.
