The iMac is among the very few devices that does not have an yearly release cycle and rarely receives any updates. Apple last updated its all-in-one computer with the M4 chip and a splash of new colour options in 2024. According to a seasoned journalist, the Cupertino-based tech giant is preparing its first new iMac in two years. The next-generation computer could be reportedly set to receive the company's upcoming M6 chipset, although a major redesign is not on the cards.
In the Q & A section of the Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman wrote that a new iMac with M6 chipset under the hood is under development. But despite the refresh, prospective customers should not expect a significant visual change to the company's all-in-one desktop computer.
Gurman does not expect it to be a "blockbuster overhaul". Instead, the most prominent upgrade is expected to be the new Apple silicon, alongside some changes to the colour options. It is reported to retain the existing design.
Since Apple switched to its own silicon, the iMac has followed a relatively slow refresh cycle compared to other products like the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. The company introduced the redesigned 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip in 2021, followed by an M3-powered model in 2023. The current iMac is powered by the M4 chipset, which was launched in 2024.

The 2024 iMac is Apple's latest desktop computer which runs on the 3nm M4 chip. It retains the 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with a 4,480x2,520-pixel resolution. Apple says that customers can configure the display with a nano-texture matte glass finish.
The PC is available in Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Silver, Yellow colourways, at a starting price of Rs. 1,74,900 for the base model with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The top-of-the-line model with 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage and the same 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU costs Rs. 3,67,900.
