Vivo will unveil Origin OS 6, which is based on Android 16, in the middle of October, the company announced on Friday. The announcement comes days after iQOO India CEO Nipun Marya revealed that the new user interface will soon replace Funtouch OS 15 on the company's smartphones in India. Both Vivo and iQOO smartphones feature the former's modern Origin OS skin in China. In India and other markets, the handsets ship with the older FuntouchOS interface instead, after OriginOS was introduced in 2020. Moreover, the new Android 16-based skin might bring major design overhauls and enhanced smoothness.
According to a press release, Vivo will unveil its new Android 16-based Origin OS 6 on October 15. On top of this, iQOO India's DGM of Product Management, Shankar Singh, in a community post on the company website, announced that the beta version of Origin OS 6 will be released soon for developers. This will help the company get feedback on the redesigned user interface, while also giving them the opportunity to fix bugs and other issues before it is launched to the public.
The executive of the Vivo sub-brand also claims that the Android 16-based Origin OS 6 update will offer a “smoother, smarter, and more personal” experience. This signals that the upcoming user interface will bring several redesigned elements, new features, and improvements in terms of the fluidity of the user interface.
Vivo, the Chinese smartphone maker, recently confirmed that the upcoming Vivo X300 Pro and Vivo X300 will be the first smartphones that will run Android 16-based Origin OS 6 out of the box. The tech firm has also confirmed that the Origin OS 6 features and redesigned elements will be first showcased in China on October 10, five days before its unveiling in India.
Apart from the design changes and new features, the Origin OS 6 update will also change the nomenclature used by the country for Android skins. Until now, Vivo and iQOO smartphones in India have run Funtouch OS in India out of the box. However, this will no longer be the case. The move also brings brand uniformity across markets for the tech giant, as it already uses the name “Origin OS” in China.
