  • The Galaxy S8 is said to have sold 37 million units globally till date
  • The earlier release date of the Galaxy S9 is said to work in its favour

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were launched, ahead of Mobile World Congress 2018, in Barcelona earlier this week, after several rounds of speculation and leaks. Despite the similarity of design and features with the previous-gen Galaxy S8 range, CEO of Samsung's mobile division DJ Koh is confident that the Galaxy S9 will outperform the Galaxy S8 in terms of sales numbers. He attributes the optimistic sales prediction to a comparatively earlier release date and the "convenience" that the Galaxy S9 provides in terms of its features.

In a statement to technology portal SamMobile, DJ Koh said, "The Galaxy S9 will be released earlier in the year than the Galaxy S8 was, and as we plan to release various marketing strategies to beef up demand, I believe overall numbers will be better." Add to that, Samsung has reportedly reworked its market strategy; the company is placing the Galaxy S9 as a "reimagined" handset that is similar to Apple's 's' variants in the iPhone range. Koh also claimed that feedback for the Galaxy S9 is better than expected as customers are looking for convenience and not "forced innovation" with their flagship smartphone purchases.

The SamMobile report claims that Samsung has sold around 37 million units of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ since launch. Notably, CEO Koh did expect the Galaxy S8 to beat sales of the Galaxy S7 last year, although the Galaxy S7 Edge was reported to have sold 55 million units (compared to the estimated 37 million units of the Galaxy S8) globally.

Further, a MobileSyrup report states that the official Canadian pricing of the Galaxy S9 duo is lower than the Galaxy S8 duo which might end up inflating sales for the latest generation in the North American nation.

Just to recap, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ feature a Samsung Exynos 9810/ Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, up to 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of inbuilt storage, and several new features including AR Emojis, improved camera sensors, and a vertically placed fingerprint sensor.
