Google on Wednesday launched a new troubleshooting app called Device Assist for Nexus, Google Play edition (GPE), and Android One devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The Device Assist app is now available for download from Google Play and is currently limited to US-based devices (Nexus, Google Play edition and Android One) running Android 5.0 Lollipop. The new app by Google provides "tips and proactive troubleshooting" when it detects issues on a device.

It offers suggestions such as changing the screen brightness setting to save battery, or for charging from a power outlet rather than from a USB port for faster charging. The app also offers a button to contact Google support team for complicated issues and reminds users to share device information with Google for improved technical support.

The Google Play listing notes some of the functions of the Device Assist app such as get proactive help with detected issues (GPS, connectivity, and battery among others); get tips to explore new features and improve the performance of device, and it also offers easy access to live Google support for Nexus and Google Play edition devices.

Notably, the Device Assist app by Google might be a way the company wants to track bugs on its latest Android 5.0 Lollipop.

On Wednesday, Google started pushing an incremental update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, dubbed Android 5.0.1 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) with build number LRX22C. Additionally, factory images of Android 5.0.1 for Wi-Fi only Nexus tablets were also published. As of now, there is no word on what precise changes the Android 5.0.1 update brings; though we expect the release to bring fixes to various bugs and issues reported by Android 5.0 Lollipop users in the recent few weeks.
