  • DxOMark is popular for its photography benchmark
  • HTC U11 has the highest DxOMark score

OnePlus has been heavily marketing the dual camera setup on its latest flagship, the OnePlus 5, and if you remember, the company back in March announced its partnership with DxO. For those unaware, DxO is popular for its photography benchmark - the DxOMark - and its review for the OnePlus 5 is out now.

According to the DxOMark review, the OnePlus 5 has scored 87 which is no doubt a high score in terms of smartphone camera performance. In fact, the high score achieved by OnePlus 5 has also managed to beat scores of some other popular phones like iPhone 7 and LG V20. However, the score achieved by OnePlus 5 disappoints when competed against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel which scored 88 and 89 respectively in their DxOMark reviews. The highest score given by DxO is 90 to the HTC U11.

For the camera, the OnePlus 5 sports a dual rear camera setup with a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a secondary 20-megapixel telephoto lens equipped sensor that together provide depth of field effects like Bokeh. On the front, it bears a 16-megapixel sensor.

In the review, DxO lists some demerits of the OnePlus 5 camera which include occasional strong loss of details in outdoor conditions, very fine details lost in low-light conditions, and ghosting effect sometimes visible in outdoor conditions.

It has also listed some of the positives about the OnePlus 5 camera, such as the ability to maintain accurate white balance in all lighting conditions, vivid and pleasant colour in all lighting conditions, good detail preservation in bright light conditions, fast and smooth autofocus in all lighting conditions, and very stable autofocus in both auto and triggered mode.

DxOMark in the review indicates that the low-light exposures in very low-light conditions remain useable on the OnePlus 5 while detail preservation is very good, but there's noticeable blur and loss of detail in some handheld shots compared to those shot on using a tripod.

Other smartphones that beat the OnePlus 5 are the HTC 10 (88 score), Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (88), and Sony Xperia X Performance Edition (88). To put things in perspective, the Huawei P10, Moto Z Force Droid, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, Sony Xperia XZ, and Sony Xperia Z5 all share the same score as the OnePlus 5 - 87.
