Gaming smartphones are a niche when you look at the smartphone market as a whole. Not too long ago, a powerful processor was considered to be the only important factor for gaming. Things have changed drastically now, and we have dedicated gaming smartphones, each one bringing something different to the table. The Nubia Red Magic 3, for instance, had an internal fan which helped it keep thermals in check. We liked it as a gaming device, but it wasn't very good at everything else. Nubia, the company behind that phone, has now launched an update called the Nubia Red Magic 3S.
Choosing a smartphone for gaming used to be quite simple. All you had to do was look for a good display and a powerful processor. While many affordable and high-end phones will let you enjoy games, there are smartphones today made specifically for gaming. We have seen phones including the Asus ROG Phone (Review), Nubia Red Magic (Review), and the Black Shark 2, even in India. These smartphones are purpose-built for gaming and most feature liquid cooling to keep the processor temperature under control. Nubia is bringing yet another gaming smartphone called the Red Magic 3 to India. It features the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC and has liquid cooling along with an internal fan.
The idea of a special smartphone for gaming might seem strange, but we're now seeing companies trying to turn this into a trendy subcategory. PUBG and Fortnite are gigantic hype machines, and at least in the PC space, gaming products are generally more expensive and therefore more profitable than commodity hardware. But what exactly makes a phone a “gaming” phone? One aspect is of course raw power, but there are plenty of mid-range and even low-end phones that games will run just fine on. Then there's styling – gamers are stereotyped with aggressive lines, red or orange accents, and now even RGB LEDs.
ZTE's Nubia subsidiary has been making decent smartphones for the Indian market for quite some time now. We were really impressed with the Z11 mini S (Review) and its successor, the Z17 Mini (Review) did well in testing too. One of the company's newest models, the Nubia M2, boasts of some good specs on paper and we hope it will live up to the same standard.
